“Tourism is vitally important to the UK. The industry provides 1.6 million jobs across the country. In 2015, we saw the greatest number of overseas visits to the UK on record, bringing £22.1 billion into our economy. Domestic overnight spend also hit a record high of £19.6 billion in England. In short, the sector goes from strength to strength.” Prime Minister, Rt. Hon Theresa May MP
The recently formed SELEP Tourism Working Group meet with the purpose of adding value to the sector, supporting pan-LEP initiatives and providing a clear route to Government, advocating for the growing sector.
With over 136 million visitors to the South East in 2016, the sector supports the economic resilience of heritage, natural and cultural sectors. It will play a vital role in enabling inward investment and visitor trade from other Countries, post Brexit.
The tourism economy within the South East LEP is strong, vibrant and important both economically and socially. The sector has the potential to continue to grow its year on year growth, contributing to both the areas GVA and employment rates.
