Clean Growth in the South East

The Government has committed to cut UK emissions 68% by 2030 and has a target to be Net Zero by 2050. This, combined with the outcomes of COP26, will shape the future operating environment for business for years to come.

As we recover from the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and look to the future, it is clear that achieving the net zero target is emerging as a key priority, area of focus and influence on consumer behaviour and an opportunity for business.

We have an unprecedented opportunity to build back responsibly and for business and public sector organisations to take climate action that creates positive outcomes for our economy and communities.

The South East LEP is dedicated to playing its part in reducing carbon emissions and working towards a net zero economy for future growth, communities and businesses across the South East.

Sustainable Recovery

Our Economic Recovery and Renewal StrategyWorking Together for a Faster, Smarter and More Sustainable Economic Recovery – highlights our dedication to clean growth by rebuilding the economy through boosting local carbon industries while cutting emissions in the move to net-zero.

Climate change continues to force the urgency for real action to hit the UK’s 2050 net-zero carbon target, and we will put clean growth at the heart of both our actions and our investments. We will work to raise awareness, influence, and champion this agenda to positively affect change, and will stimulate and promote opportunities that contribute to a zero-carbon society as well as offer significant potential for growth and new employment.

Examples are increasing renewable energy clusters, adapting to resource efficient ways of operating and encouraging the transport revolution.

These activities will help to deliver our Tri-LEP South2East Local Energy Strategy and encourage the growth of the low carbon sector for jobs, skills and prosperity, and help to deliver on the Government’s Ten Point Plan for a green industrial revolution.

Working Together

Our Clean Growth Working Group brings together key professionals and organisations from our region to drive clean growth in the South East, reducing carbon emissions whilst enabling economic growth.

Together with Coast to Capital and Enterprise M3 LEPs, SELEP’s Clean Growth Working Group produced our South2East Local Energy Strategy, which demonstrates the step change required across industry, business and society to successfully meet the ambitious Climate Change Act 2050 net-zero target for greenhouse gas emissions.

The South East Local Enterprise Partnership is well-placed to help coordinate and galvanise clean growth across the region, building on our South2East Local Energy Strategy, our Economic Recovery and Renewal Strategy, and our ongoing work with partners, of which clean growth remains an overarching theme.

Economic Recovery and Renewal

Our Economic Recovery and Renewal Strategy – Working Together for a Faster, Smarter and More Sustainable Economic Recovery – sets out how we will work with partners to support a path to recovery and renewal in the short to medium term, with clean growth one of our four major strategic priorities.

Over the next 30 years, our energy systems will need to rapidly evolve to enable us to decarbonise and take advantage of new technologies such as electric vehicles. SELEP worked with Coast to Capital and Enterprise M3 to create an Energy Strategy for the South East, an area spanning all the way from Harwich to Winchester.
