The South East Local Enterprise Partnership (SELEP) Accountability Board, has awarded the Kent and Medway Medical School a further £1million of Local Growth Funding.

This award is a supplement to the initial £8 million grant provided last year.

Professor Chris Holland, Founding Dean of the Kent and Medway Medical School, said:

“We are delighted to receive this additional funding from SELEP. The past few months have shown how essential having a robust NHS provision in Kent and Medway is. Training the next generation of Doctors is an important part of the plans to support this in the future.”

KMMS is the first medical school in Kent and Medway, providing a centre in the region for medical education and research to develop the area’s health workforce, and address the growing need for medical professionals in the area due to rapid housing and population growth. The first cohort of 108 students started in September.

SELEP Chair Christian Brodie said:

“Bolstering the South East’s offering within STEM education is now more important than ever. We are dedicated to supporting students and graduates to ensure that the next generation of workers receive access to the best resources available.

“KMMS is Kent’s first medical school, providing a draw for highly skilled professionals and serving a growing community. The SELEP Board is pleased to be able to award available Local Growth Funding to support the projects in the South East that have been adversely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. We are keen to see the completion of these projects and look forward to witnessing the benefits they bring to the South East.”
